What Career Cluster 911?
I called the national career cluster person and asked for 911 to have it's own space - there isn't one for 911 - it's under Public Safety but not really. Guess what - very interesting he said - no action as of yet.
What is a Career Cluster? Vocational Education - where you become educated to enter a career - is organized into 16 professional clusters. One of those clusters is Public Safety as seen below. Within this structure there is NO mention of or inclusion of Emergency Communications. Each year I approach the National Organization for Career Clusters and ask that this profession become a part of this cluster - which is important.
Why is it important? Many reasons to include that the pathway designed for high school and college students finding their career is invisible to our public. Therefore colleges and high schools who are training individuals do not consider 9-1-1 as a potential course or what they call pathway. I will continue to lobby for this profession to be recognized.
Here is what the US Department of Education says:
The U.S. Department of Education's Career Clusters are organized into 16 broad categories that encompass virtually all occupations from entry through professional levels. Career Clusters identify the knowledge and skills needed to follow a pathway toward career goals and provide a context for exploring the many occupational options available. Note that each Cluster is divided into different pathways that are grouped by the knowledge and skills required for occupations in these career fields.
